This variation, which appears in the first part of the tune and merely replaces the E G D or (E F´ G triplet) D, which could be considered the norm, with an E Eb D series of notes. The effect of this can be exaggerated by lifting the chanter off the knee when playing the Eb and D notes.

 

This variation changes the phrasing a little and is very pleasing if not overdone. A slight variation on the variation is to go to the Cnat key instead of the B roll as in the Audio clip.
